The Northwest AIA would like to thank the Jurors for the 2009 Design Awards


Jerry Ernst, FAIA, FAICP






     Jerry is a registered architect and certified planner with over forty years of diversified experience in architecture, physical planning and urban design. He received his Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Urban Planning at the University of Washington. Formerly a Partner with TRA, and then a Principal with NBBJ, Jerry is now an independent urban design consultant. He is highly skilled at helping people visualize the physical consequences of choices about the future, and has utilized this skill extensively in facilitating community involvement in a wide variety of public design and planning processes. Projects completed under his direction have received nineteen different awards for excellence from the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Planning Association. Over the last twenty years, Jerry has provided urban design guidance to communities across North America. Most notably for our region, Jerry has ben a key team member of planning teams for the City of Stanwood (DAT), City of Mount Vernon Waterfront Master Plan and Bellingham Waterfront Futures.
 

Edward (Ed) Weinstein, FAIA






     Ed is an award-winning architect who has practiced in the Puget Sound region for over thirty years. A principal and founder of Weinstein A|U Architects + Urban Designers, Mr. Weinstein has designed a wide range of project types. He has successfully assisted a wide variety of clients in solving complex problems, arriving at unique design solutions that meet the specific needs of each client. In the public sector, Mr. Weinstein has been recognized for his leadership on the NewHolly Redevelopment Project, bringing design vision to a highly successful transformation of a troubled public housing project—a national model of a desirable mixed income neighborhood. He recieved his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Washington and his Masters of Architecture and Urban Design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Mr. Weinstein is also recognized as a leader in the community. He is actively involved with the University of Washington School of Architecture. He was a member of the Seattle Design Commission from 1987 to 1990, and served as Chair from 1990 to 1992.
 

William (Bill) Dietrich,






     Bill balances work as an author, journalist, and university professor. He is the author of 13 books and teaches environmental journalism at Western Washington University. Dietrich was born and raised in Tacoma, WA and earned a degree in journalism from the university where he now teaches. His newspaper career began at the Bellingham Herald, followed by jobs at Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C., and at the Vancouver, WA Columbian. He came to the Seattle Times in 1982. Assignments there took him to the Arctic, the Antarctic, and around the world. Dietrich’s first book, “The Final Forest: The Battle For the Last Great Trees of the Pacific Northwest,” won the Governor Writer’s Award and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. Dietrich first covered Skagit County as a reporter in 1973. In 1998 he moved to Fidalgo Island with his wife Holly and two daughters. His reporting often illustrates his interested in maintaining the quality of life and environmental resources of this region, including contributed essays to books for the Skagit Land Trust, Whatcom Land Trust, and Fidalgo Island.
